1) What terms and numbers should be used when describing the charge capacity and time?
A: With the existing AC adapter in compatible models, the HP Long Life Battery will charge to 90% capacity in 90 minutes. This is not a “fast charge” feature and is comparable to other packs available on the market. Boston-Power Sonata cells do support a true “fast charge” capability of 90% capacity in 45 minutes but HP has not yet implemented this on any notebook models.
2) How does capacity retention of the HP Long Life battery compare to standard lithium-ion batteries?
A: The HP Long Life Battery is powered by Boston-Power Sonata cells designed to retain at least 80% of their original capacity for 3 years or 1000 cycles. Standard lithium-ion batteries will retain less than 30% of their initial capacity after only 2 years. (See backup chart for details).
3) How are charge cycles calculated?
A: HP defines a single cycle as equivalent to 100% depth of discharge, meaning the battery is fully discharged. When the battery is not fully discharged, control electronics in the battery track cumulative amount of discharge and when that number reaches 100%, another cycle is counted. So for example, a user would need to discharge the battery to 50% two times (50 x 2) to count as a single cycle. Or a user would need to discharge the battery to 20% five times (20 x 5) to count as single cycle. Simply connecting the AC adapter does not count as a charge cycle. Only when the cumulative discharge reaches 100% does it count as a cycle.
4) How does this battery compare to standard lithium-ion batteries in terms of initial capacity and runtime?
A: Using independent testing done by MobileMark as a reference, you can see that a standard 55Wh battery pack does offer a slightly higher initial runtime due to its higher capacity. But you will also note that within 200 cycles – less than one year of use – the difference is negligible and that a 49Wh pack powered by Sonata cells starts offering an additional hour of runtime by 500 cycles and an additional 2 hours of runtime by 750 cycles.
